Let's Kick It!
The Right Attitude Can Change Everything ...

by J. Michael Farabe

Learning to Respect Self and Others

According to martial arts expert Joyce Roberson, author of “Karate for Kids,” allowing your child to receive martial arts training is not opening up a door to violence, it is opening a door to building a solid foundation of self-esteem and confidence.

"Students learn that respect for others, as a priority, naturally leads to a respect for self," explains the author. "This wonderful philosophy is often at odds with what our young people learn here in the United States. We have become obsessed with the 'me first' mentality which often leads to emotionally unhealthy young people.”

In addition to building confidence and self-esteem, classes in martial arts offer many other benefits, as well. According to Roberson, children with learning challenges, such as ADHD, hyperactivity or behavior problems, can benefit from the structured learning program that martial arts training provides.

And the reverse is true, as well. Gifted kids can kick and punch their way to fitness and higher self-esteem by participating in martial arts.

Martial arts enthusiast Tee Thompson agrees. Both of his daughters (ages 11 and 7) are involved in martial arts and the results are amazing. “In a world gone crazy,” explains Thompson, “martial arts teaches a refreshing philosophy of respect for self and others. This attitude sets the tone for all things that follow. It stays with you the rest of your life.”

Thompson has been involved in Martial Arts since 1973. He currently is a stay-at-home dad, raising his two daughters and operates a web site dedicated to helping people through the Martial Arts. The site, MartialArtCentral.com, offers self-help books on martial arts, as well as, Martial Arts uniforms.

According to Thompson, what makes his site unique is that the uniforms are of better quality than most and at a more affordable price. Not to mention, flexibility. “You can order the jacket one size and the pants another,” explained Thompson.
